永恆主的話第二次傳與約拿說︰

And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying,
|
|

|
「你起來，往尼尼微那大城去，向它的居民宣告我所吩咐你宣告的話。
|
|
|
Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
|
|
3:3
|
約拿便起來，照永恆主的話往尼尼微去。這尼尼微是個極大的城，要走三天、才走得完。
|
|
|
So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.
|

3:4
|
約拿便進城﹔走著一天的行程，直宣告說︰「再過四十天（七十子作『三天』），尼尼微就覆滅了。」
|
|
|
And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
|

|
尼尼微人信了上帝，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿著麻衣。
|
|
|
So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
|

|
這消息傳到尼尼微王那里，他就從寶座上起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在爐灰中。
|
|
|
For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
|
|
3:7
|
又出通告傳遍尼尼微說︰「王和大臣有諭旨說︰人和牲口、牛群羊群、什么都不可嘗，草不可吃，水也不可喝。
|
|
|
And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
|

|
人與牲口都要披上麻布﹔要極力呼求上帝﹔各人要回轉過來、離開他的壞行徑，丟棄手中的強暴﹔
|
|
|
But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
|
|
3:9
|
或者上帝改變初衷，回心轉意、不發烈怒，使我們不至于滅亡，也未可知。」
|
|
|
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
|
|
3:10
|
上帝看他們所作的，見他們回轉過來、離開他們的壞行徑，上帝對那災禍（『災禍』一詞與上『壞』字同字）就改變心意︰他說要降與他們的，如今也不降了。
|
|
|
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
